Public Spaces

Seven Hills works towards improving access and use of public spaces in Amman and wider Jordan. Seven Hills carries out small to large infrastructural construction projects in collaboration with municipalities and local community members. Our projects centre skateboarding in the development of urban infrastructure designed to activate Jordan’s most marginalized communities and spaces. Our long-term goal is to develop skate friendly, accessible and decentralized public spaces throughout Jordan in which all people can use and develop further.

Seven Hills not only constructs skateparks, but also develops public spaces to include additional dimensions and activities to maximize community engagement. This has included basketball courts, playgrounds, green spaces, seating areas, and meeting points. We make our public spaces accessible and usable for all of Jordan’s demographics as free-to-use community spaces with a variety of activities and programming without any societal barriers.

To do this we always take a bottom-up participatory approach involving community members in the design, construction, maintenance and development of our projects to support the local economy and community ownership; where the youth not only participate in our programs but also build the spaces where these programs are run.

We have built two skateparks in Amman thus far, and just recently (December 2022) facilitated the renovation of the park that hosts the Seven Hills Skatepark in downtown Amman. With funds from a local bank and in partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality, we created disability-friendly pathways to access the entire public space, in addition to adding a new playground for children and a small amphitheatre for extra seating and public interventions.
